I have a fireplace that needs some repair for obvious water damage, heat soak which has degraded the brick and mortar near the firebox on the exterior of the fireplace. The house is getting a modern facelift and the firplace is getting a retrofit conversion from wood to gas burning. Installing a new metal flue/vent and tube intu the chimney.
Is it out of the question to cover the entire exterior brick with a smooth concrete or stucco finish? Some of the brick around the firebox will be repointed and touched up, but after that can the whole thing be skinned with concrete? Is this an insane idea? Heat soak will be minimal with the new firebox / metal vent.
I think for looks and longevity this is the only option other than dismantling the whole thing.
