I'm going to have to run a snake down my bathroom slow draining drain.. It looks like 1/4 in. one would do.
My question is ,what do you think about the snake i should buy? there are 3-4 types at the plumbing store from the one you twist through the drain by hand,to the drill powered type.
Pros and cons of both would be appreciated .
Thanks

Although most would think the power auger/snake would be better, I disagree. If you have ever gotten a hand snake twisted in the pipe and had problems getting it back out, think of the problems you would have by "powering" it into a knot. With the handcrank type, you can feel the obstruction. Sometimes you have to reverse and then go at it again. Once again I am going to recommend using an enzyme drain cleaner as a maintenance product. Bathroom sinks usually have a high content of hair, soap and gunk. Enzyme cleaners cling to and "eat" organic matter. Even after you snake the line, there will be stuff on the pipe walls that will be the start of another clog. I prefer Draincare by Zep. Good luck.

Snakes generally only punch a hole through a clog the size of the snake which then reclogs quickly.I second the motion of enzyme drain cleaner and have sold Draincare with good feedback.

Thanks majakdragon & spdavid,

I will get some draincare. I was using a solution of vinegar and baking soda for awhile. I read somewhere that was another method to clean drains.
Your right about just plugging a hole in the stoppage with a snake, and getting a kink stuck using a power snake would be a nightmare.

Is draincare a hardware store item?

Thanks

I have seen it at Home Centers, hardwares Walmart and even some larger grocery stores. It comes in two types, liquid and powder. A multi-use jug is about $8. Be sure to follow instructions on label, especially the part about using hot water.

Followup,

Got some draincare a couple days ago and followed the procedure. Drain flow was improving, but still slow. I got impatient and took a plumber's friend to the sink bowl. Eureka!!...there was
a 'glug' sound and the drain emptied like there was no tomorrow!
I'd like to think that draincare was the reason.

Just thought i'd let you know. I plan on following the draincare recommendations from now on.
Thanks again.:D

Glad you solved the problem. I know the Draincare works and perhaps your "help" did the trick faster.
