I have a space on the back of my house that could use some renovations.
it is kind of a patio/porch/mudroom right now.
currently it has a wooden door, lots of windows that i think are painted into place (we just bought this house it wasnt us i swear).
when the door is open, directly infront of you is a steep step of stairs that lead to the basement entrance. currently they have a hinged peice of nonweight bearing plywood that covers the access, and swings to the left (away from the wall). Leaving it off is not an option, people would break their necks...
instead of straight and down the stairs, if we stand in place and turn 90 degrees counterclockwise, there are 2 steps (2nd step is the floor). the floor is carpetted PURPLE if you can believe it. This is a decent space (i'll get dimensions if necessary). it leads to the back door of the house.
I'd love suggestions on how to spruce this room up. Moreover, if someone could give suggestions on how to fix the death trap to make it fit with a porch, perhaps make the space more usable, and maybe safer that would be great!
We are currently thinking better lighting, a nice coat of paint, tile the carpetted section, replace the door (maybe windows?), paint poured concrete. I dont really see this space as being more than a mud room, since the windows are at chest level and small...
any suggestions would be great thanks

Whoa! Good description, but I got lost on the second step with purple carpet. Is there anyway you could post a few pictures of what you have so we all can see it too. Remember you are standing there, we aren't. We await the pix.

There's hundreds of free photo hosting sites. Use google.
We really can't help without pics but there's a fair bunch of us who have done porches so once we see the area I bet we'll have some ideas :)
