I told you this was dumb but I am serious.
What is a lineset. I read about it here and feel like an idiot cause everyone but me seems to know.
What I do know is that it is the line going from the inside unit to the outside unit.
But is it 1 or 2 lines? Sounds like it might be a pair of copper tubes, hence why it might be called a "set" of lines:confused:
Is this something that you make from copper tubing or do you buy it paired or can you do either.
I am looking to have central AC put in my home shortly and I feel much more comfortable if I understand what it is I am about to spend a bundle of money on.
I have googled this and it seems that everything google pulled up was places to buy it not details about it. But every place selling it has only 50 foot lengths. What if I dont need so much. The google entries that sold it seemed awfully pricey for some copper pipe.
I now know what it feels like to be blond:p :)

We refer to the lineset as the 2 copper pipes running from the evaporator to the condensor. The suction line (larger pipe) is insulated. They can be purchased as a set, but down here we usually "build" them ourselves. If you need shorter than 50' you cut the lines to length.
Yes, copper is expensive. And no, there really is no dumb question except for the ones unasked.

My father in law, who is HVAC licensed, is doing the AC for me.
but I bet you can guess who will get to do any grunt work if there needs to be??
So he was telling me that I needed to A) get a concrete pad for the outside unit to go on B)Get a condensate pump (I dont have an accessible drain in the ocation of the furnace) and C) measure from the furnace location to the concrete pad for the length of the lineset.
I am having a service upgrade being done right now and the electricians are installing the disconnect for the AC.
So I was unaware what a lineset was and I came across them on google from various online places that only had 50 foot legnths and I only need 30 feet tops and I dont want to have that much waste when they only appeared to be 2 different sized copper lines, in in insulation and 1 not with some kinds of compression fittings on the ends. I have been still searching since my last post here
Is a lineset something other than what I have just described? Just plain only copper

You need to know the diameter of the copper needed dependent upon the size and efficiency of the unit. Then you would purchase the suction and liquid lines in rolls of 50'. Then you purchase the rubatex insulation for the size suction line you have. It comes in 6' lengths.
Your FIL should be able to tell you what you need size-wise. If you measured 30' with a tape you can bet you will probably need closer to 40-45 foot allowing for sweeping turns and such.

Dim Bulb,
I agree that your father in law should be taking care of this detail for you.
If he is qualified and properly licensed he should really be the one to worry about the details and calling the shots.
The input in this project you are attempting could put some responsibility on you if any mistakes were made.
