I have a woodburning fireplace with an odd size ash dump opening. The old ash dump door has deteriorated and needs replacement. Problem is the opening is 5" by 8-1/2" which is too small for a "standard" size cast iron door, which seem to require a 5" by 9-1/2" opening.
I've been told that easiest solution is to widen the opening in the firebrick floor, however, what's the best way to do this safely, i.e. not destroying the fireplace. Suggestions and how-to info would be appreciated.
