We have a Caloric range/oven. Cannot find Model number on stove anywhere, but old wiring diagram on back says its for "Mod.77Y, 74Y, H76Y". No parts companies on Internet (inc Maytag) seem to recognize this as a model. Date of diagram is 1966. The regulator switch on the front of the range which turns on the oven is broken. We know this because it was repaired once --temporarily-- by a handyman. I call it a "regulator" only because after a quarter turn it clicks to activate the (pilot-fed) oven burner, and further turning adjusts the oven temperature, all the way up to Broil. We want to keep this range because of its unique configuration. I need to find a replacement for this "regulator" or "switch". I don't know the real name for it (it is NOT the plastic knob attached to it), and can't figure out the model number of the range. It has a separate second Ultra-Ray broiler, and its faded sales name is "xxxxxxx Heritage".
Questions: Where is Model number? What is format of Model number in those days? What is name of part? Where can I get a replacement part? If none, how can I fix the regulator? All suggestions are welcome - I intend to solve this!

Hello kdmcgann. Welcome to Gas Appliances topic and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
The part is called a thermostat. Most likely a Harper Wyman brand name T-Stat, Honeywell or Robert Shaw. 3 major manufacturers of oven T-Stats.
Best suggestion would be to remove the temp knob, look into opening where T-Stat is located and write down the identifying numbers and brand name of thermostat.
Also the numbers provided in this question posted and visit any local appliance repair and or parts stores in your area. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.
Online shopping is not always the best method for some parts, unless a person knows exactly what is needed, etc.
By the way, if the part you are describing is behind the temp dial, it is the thermostat. Thermostats are available for the year model described. Visit a parts store.

OK, Thanks for clearing some of this up. Now i know i'm looking for a thermostat, and I guess i can get some part info off the existing one. But I'm still curious about the Model Number of the range itself. I've looked on all the hinges and door jambs and all of the outside, can't find it. Does anybody know what a sample model number for a late 60's Caloric 40-inch 4-burner range, oven plus separate broiler, "heritage" model, would look like? And where it would be?

Hello: kdmcgann
Most likely the manufacturers rate and model plate is located under the bottom cover plate in the bottom oven. (Broiler section) Remove the racks (2) and rack holders (2). Lift the cover up and presto, rate plate should be right there.
