I have a pressure treated 6"x6" post which is buried 4' deep and held together by 160 lbs of concrete.
the above ground portion of the 6x6 is developing a vertical split and rather than (eventually) digging up the whole thing and replacing it, would like to put some sort of brace or clamp around a couple of the areas in order to secure it.
Ideally I'm looking for 2 pieces of steel such that I can place one on each side of the 6x6 and then use nuts/bolts to tighten the steel pieces together thereby "clamping" the 6x6
anything like that? what's it called
thanks for any suggestions,
-MC

MC: most all 4x4's and 6x6's will develop checks, as they are called. You will run yourself ragged trying to keep up with them in time. Unless the check is threatening structural stability, I wouldn't mess with it. You won't close it, no matter how many clamps you put on it.

I bought these large sized hose clamps in the plumbing section of the hardware store.
I don't know what they're called but they are circular, metal, and have a tightening screw on one end. They come in different diameters.
The biggest one will just barely fit around the 6"x6" and I tighten it up pretty good.
best I could come up with,
