In our door, the holes where the new knob and deadbolt would go are about 5 inches in, rather than whatever is standard (2 and something).

How would I get a doorknob (and deadbolt) with a longer part that sticks out?

Hi Snowbug;
The standard is either 2 3/8" or 2 3/4" but a 5" is'nt unheard of.
The 5" Backset are usually used in situations where the door trim or frame might interfere with a standard backset operation.
Weiser, Schlage and possibly other manufacturers make 5" backset locks in both knob and deadbolt function but would likely have to be special ordered by the big box stores.
A local Locksmith shop might have some in stock though.

This was custom-built in 1959 and apparently the cool looking diamond shape around the doorknob precluded putting the doorknob in the proper place.

I'll have it special ordered. Thanks!

5" is one thing but what looks really odd from way back then is when a builder would use a 16" backset to put the knob in the center of the doorwith a huge fancy escutcheon plate Needless to say, the backset is about a 3 month or more wait from the manufacturer.
