We have been getting estimates to have an approx. 12X15 stamped/stained concrete patio. The person we spoke to yesterday told us that he doesn't use "metal" reinforcment due to the rust seeping through. He said that he uses some type of synthetic material....not sure if it is added to cement mixture or layed like wire mesh into the concrete.
I have never heard of not using some type of wire mesh. Is this something new or is this guy skimping on materials to keep his costs down?
Is 4 inches of concrete sufficient? How much gravel should be put down? We live in Ohio and have harsh winters.

I would suggest talking to other contractors.

According to the contractor you have been talking to, the people that have been making and using wire mesh have been leading people astray for many years. A good contractor uses and can place wire mesh for crack control/reinforcement without any rust, so your contractor is not being straight with you.

Fiber mesh (steel, nylon, polypropelene, etc.) can be used to reduce cracking in slabs. Certain types are tough to work with and can give you problems with the surface appearance.

On my last slab, I used both because the cost extra was minimal compared to the insurance it gives you. Its your call.

A 4" slab is enough thickness. You do not have severe winter conditions, but you should make sure the contractor uses air entrained concrete to provide freeze-thaw resistance.

For a patio, 4"-6" of compacted gravel is enough unless you have really bad soil.

Thanks for your response Dick. It didn't sound right to us either. I assume that this contractor will take no responsibility for early cracking. We were told by another contractor that concrete cracks and they can't prevent it. I agree with that as long as everything is done properly and all precautions are taken.
We have clay soil with lots of builders gravel in it.
