When I bought my house years ago, the former owner had put in replacement windows but never sealed the trim (wood parts).

I scraped them down and used marine varnish to seal them up.

Now that's starting to peel up, so here's what I've been thinking:

Use a tiny corner sander to take off the remaining varnish and then re-varnish.

Make sense ?? BTW - I live in upstate NY.

Yup
Good idea
Best to remove it all as there could be compatibility issues with the new stuff
I suspect the prep wasn't up to snuff or it wouldn't have peeled
Be triple careful when re-doing it
Sand well and use tack cloths to clean the surface before applying
Sand and tack in between each coat (220 grit-or what the product recommends)

I admit I was in a hurry to get it sealed before winter set in back then. I don't begrudge it anything though... It's been nearly 15 yrs since I put it on
