I want to rent an apartment in New York City that I can burly afford but I really want to live there. I thought to take a roommate but I need to separate his room from the living room.
The landlord tolled me that I can’t build permanent wall in the apartment.
Is there any way to build a wall with out destroy the floor?

Thank You for the help,

Mike

I doubt you can build a "wall" without messing up the floor but I could be wrong! I do know they have those slider things that you can install and it opens and closes (and folds) but I'm sure you'd have to screw in some things on the floor, wall and ceiling but I don't know what it's called....I dunno. I don't know or think your landlord would let you...

Here's another ugly idea:

sorry if that had to be edited...I'm not trying to sell you that.

But just an idea that might look better...

I've never used these before though I've thought of buying one but you can definitely buy one of those room dividers/folding screens and use that. There are all sorts of room dividers everywhere. Some look nice...some look bad. Or you can buy a big bookcase, fill it up and use that as a room divider. I have a fairly big enough bookcase at home that can definitely be used as a divider and would look nice. I have this but in a black/dark brown color: (There's even taller and I think wider ones than that)

In the meanwhile, wait to see if other post some better idea or thoughts.

What kind of floor do you have now? How long and how tall will the wall be? Will there be a door in the wall?
I think if the wall is not too tall or long and has no door that you could put in a bottom and top plate and wedge the studs into it so that tension alone holds it. it might scuff the floor and ceiling though. You would have to screw the drywall or paneling or whatever you put on the wall because driving nails with a hammer would move it. If you bumped it with a heavy piece of furniture it might move. If you have a door in it it will not work as well. This could be done with mostly screws so that it is easier to dismantle, too.

I would like to have a door if it's possible. The ceiling height is 8'.
Or maybe I will use the bookcase.

Thanks again for the help,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Just saw your message. I had the same situation a few weeks ago and I found a pretty good solution.
There are a few companies that install temporary pressure walls.
It is a drywall installation with a door and window (what ever you need) that does not require any drilling or glue during installation.
I suggest you check out www.apartmentdividers.com
eventually I used their service and they were great.

Good luck,

Amanda:)
