I'd like to build a deck with a pergola over part of it.

The deck will be be about a 16' x 24' rectangle. I'd like to put an 8' x 12' or 14' pergola somewhere around the middle of it.

My question is this:
After I have the deck framed up but before I actually put on the decking, should I run install four posts for the pergola and then basically "deck around" them, OR, should I just go ahead and deck, then build the pergola on top of it?

Thanks!

The pergola will be free-standing. It's posts nedd to be embedded in concrete footings, or, if it's going to be wood, have post bases like Simpson CBSQ's embedded in the footings and the posts attached to them. Build the pergola first and deck around it.
