Howdy,
The owner wants a concrete landing at the door so you don't have to walk back down the steps after unlocking the door in order to open the storm door... and her decorator says she absolutely "has" to get rid of her current awning. I completely agree with her decorator, because the current awning is one of those pre-fab, metal outfits that looks like the top portion of a roll-top desk; and, it won't provide enough coverage over the new landing.
Building a new awning, (which will be a wood-framed, gable type, sized appropriately for the landing), is easy; but, my problem is figuring out how to attach the awning to the house...
The structure I build will have to butt up against a brick wall. How are things like this anchored to a brick wall? I certainly want my work to be up to code, and even more importantly, I want it to be solid. Disaster would be an understatement if this thing fell off as the owner was scrambling to get out of the rain...:o
I've thought about drilling all the way through the brick wall and using some heavy-duty bolts... I'm sure it would work, but if there are better ways to do this, I'm all ears! It would be nice if I could anchor it so that any columns wouldn't really be considered load-bearing, so that I could take a more decorative rather than strength-minded approach in that department.
Anyways, any ideas/infos/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
~Jeffrey
