My 5th grade daughter is doing a science fair project titled "What Makes Smoke Go Up a Chimney"? We are looking for any info or links that might be useful to explain in elementary terms why smoke goes up a fireplace chimney, but does not flow into the rest of the house. Any info or leads will be greatly appreciated. All searches I have done have resulted mostly in commercial ads to sell products related to firplaces.
Thanks and take care,
Jaimie

The fire warms the air, which makes it lighter.
Because it is lighter, it goes up the chimney instead of out into the room.
As the warm air goes up the chimney, it carries the smoke with it.
