I have a ranch style house in San Diego CA. The rear of the house is an "H" shape (The Master Bdrm and Fam Room project out). This "H" shape creates an area about 12 x 12 with one open side to the back yard.
My point is I was thinking about building some type of cover there.
I believe I read somewhere you cannot use the rafter tails for structural support (although thats exactly what I want to do) :)
I was thinking of placing a ledger board on the facsia boards, screwed into the rafter tails, and using this to support some type of lightweight cover.
My only other idea was to build some type of 4-post stucture so that the roof of this stucture would fall under the existing roof. In other words, rain would fall off the edge of my roof, onto a slightly pitched flat roof and out to the backyard.
Any input on this?
To be specific:
Could I hang 1/2" or 3/4" plywood with 2x4 (joists) maybe 16" o/c, off the rafter tails? The weight would be maybe 13 2x4's and 5 sheets of plywood plus any roofing matl.
My existing roof is 2x6's, 24" o.c. (hip roof)

Thanks, Brian

You should not be worried about the dead load only. There are other loads that can affect your home.

Wind can create very large forces that can put additional loads on your roof. You could trap wind that could help to raise your roof among other things.

The "lightweight cover" could possibly permit someone to get on top. Ant lighweight wood cover sounds like a way to try to get around the building code, which is difficult in San Diego county.

How about a cloth canopy you can pull back so you can enjoy the stars on a nice San Diego night?
