Moved into 4 year old house. When we got here the water heaters were connected in a big loop. That is the cold entered the house and split. On each side of the split there is a check valve and then the run to two WHs. The output of the WHs snake through the the house and finally are connected together.

When the cold water is run, the checkvalves "bang" and hot water backs up into the cold line. In fact, if the washer is filling with hot water, most of the cold water faucets run warm or even very hot.

This is way beyond my abilities, so I soon gave up and spent $500 and had a plumber come out and look at the house. He basically said that he could make some changes to help, but could not guarantee a fix. He did spend 4 hours working, so I know he tried his best and was not cheeting me or anything like that. But he also didn't fix the problem either. He moved the check valves around, added expansion tanks and did a few other things that I could not catch.

After reading about 20 of the posts in this forum, I guess my only option is to replumb the house so that the WHs are in series and I just terminate the pipe where the second WH feeds the house.

Is there anything I should be careful of when doing this? Has anybody else found an easier way to fix this problem? And one last thing. Is there anything like a "plumbing engineer" that I can hire to check the house for me. Thanks
