what is the best screw to use to attach kitchen cabinets to the wall? I plan on hitting the studs, but just in case, I attached a 3 inch band of 3/4 inch plywood across the studs, where the cabinets will be screwed.

Hi John- I can tell you what not to use, drywall screws, although probably half the cabinets in the country are hung using them. They are not designed to take heavy shear loading and are too brittle for the job.
There are high tensile strength steel screws designed for hanging cabinets. They have an oversize flanged head to resist tearout. They are usually available at home centers.

Attaching to that bander that you have installed, 2"course thred will dIf you are installing "bag-n-box cabinets, over drywall, then 2-1/2" are sufficient.
Over plaster, 3".

Predrill and slightly countersink the screws.

I use Reiser #9 x 3" course threaded torx screws. If you wanna get fancy you can put a finishing washer around them
instead of countersinking them flush. But usually the screws are not in an obvious place where they would be seen.

Some brands of cabinets include screws for installing. Use the washer head screws to attach to the wall and use finish screws to attach the styles(vertical faceframe members) of adjoining cabinets.
