I have what appears to be vinyl replacement windows in my home. The house was built in 1925 and the replacement windows are built into the framing of the old windows. One of my windows is difficult to operate. Upon further inspection, the "sash rod" is disconnected. I dont know if thats what its called, but it seems to be similiar to a sash cord, except that it is a flat piece of metal that is "spiraled." I hope this makes sense. This rod has come off the and I tried to reattach it, but it keeps slipping off. Can this be repared, or does the window nneed to be replaced? I've googled for info on this type of setup, looked in books on home repair, but I havent seen any windows that use this rod. Any info is definitely appreciated (even the right termonology)!
Thanks,

Hi Stavs,
the sash rod you are referring to is called a "spiral balance", and you need to have a special tool that hooks onto the 2 pins at the bottom of the rod. The tool is like a crank that you use to "wind" the spiral balance, giving it 4 or 5 turns until it has spring tension, then you hook it onto the "pivot shoe" and it will stay put. If it doesn't stay put after it is wound, the spring has sprung and the balance needs to be replaced.
The tool and the balances are available from various locations, including one of the big box stores (internet site only). If you Google for "spiral balance" (in quotes) I think you will find it.
