can i use felt as an underlayment for a floating floor? i have a plywood floor, so a vapor barrier wouldn't come into play i wouldn't think, but for wood against wood i think it would work as well as anything else, but thats just me....what do you pro's think? and should it be 15 r 30 lbs.?
1 more thing....how long do i have have to let the flooring set before laying it down? the box says 48 hrs...the air is on...should i go with the 48 hrs r more? is more better...in this case?
ty so much for ur help....Billy :)

Individual manufacturer's of floating floors tend to have very specific instructions for acclimation, subfloor prep, underlayment, and installation. It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to maintain warranty.

You won't have wood against wood unless you are forgetting the foam padding. The felt would be optional, and it is not needed, but you do need the foam underlayment.
Longer is better is you don't have a moisture meter to verify anything.

You have to use the foam padding underneath a floating install. Why are you trying to avoid this?:)

hi Jerry, truth is felt is cheaper down here, and ifffff i don't need the pad then why use it? isn't the purpose of the pad to keep the wood from rubbing against wood? if so then felt should work....i would think...sense Katrina hit here prices r unreal for everything, i lost all i had and i'm trying to rebuild so i need to save where i can, if i can....but if i need it, i need it...just not sure why...could you explain why i do need it please? i hope to be putting it down soon...ty so much for responding

Billy, I am truly sorry for you folk. We forget to often y'all are still dealing with this. I don't know how you are able to cope with this and I pray that things get better for all of you as soon as possible.
I can't give you the exact reason for the padding, I can tell you that if you don't use it you got no warranty from any manufacturer. Don't lose anymore than you already have.
How much pad do you need and where do you live? You can contact me thru my homepage in my profile.
Give me all the info on what brand and type laminate you are using, ect. I may have sources that can help you.

hi Jerry, i'm in Gulfport Mississippi.... ty so much for ur concern, and ur offer to help, but i'll be putting the floor down today...i hopeeeee...loll..i'll buy the padding and use it...
yes i guess living in the good ole USA u would think after about 7 mo. things would be much better, and some things r, but its really slow go here, the money we had we bought a used double wide and gutted it, and now i'm fixing it up, but at the same time i have to work also, i do drywall and metal stud work...with ur wife looking at u with really no place to stay and u have to work its hard deciding what to do sometimes...
but i'm lucky, some r still living in tents here, so please don't bring up Fema...lolll...not a good subject...
i live about 5 miles off the beach so we didn't get any water damage, the wind just blew everything we had away...
we drove to the beach the other day and out of some 30 miles of beach homes maybeeeee 8 r left standing, and with no road signs to go by, having lived here all my life i still had no clue where i was, there was nothing but slabs...its really unreal...
but the coast has had a lot of help from churches and people like you that really do care...u just have to see it to believe it, its nothing like shown on t v....but little by little where getting there....
again ty so much for the offer to help, it really does mean alot, and it lets you know that its NOT our gov. that makes this country great its the people...again ty you my friend....Billy

The only thing you have to worry about, putting a heavy felt underneath your floating floor is whether or not there is any movement along the joints, as this can cause separation. If you want to save money, I would hit up a big box flooring store and pick up the cheap underlayment. shouldnt cost you more than 15 cents a foot.
If you are having problems with this, you may always get foam padding ups'd from a store in the north, as the going rate for foam padding up here is 15-30 cents a foot.
