I'm looking at buying a condo. My favorite listing has a standalone fireplace, I guess it is a "stove." It can be seen at this link:

Is it possible to convert this to a normal fireplace in the wall with a mantel? If so, would I have to move the chimney, or be creative on how to direct the smoke into the hole in the ceiling that is away from the wall? Is this a difficult project, and about what would it cost?
Thanks!!

You won't be able to mantel or cover this type unit because of the heat factor. This type unit heats all around itself. That is why it is 3' from a combustible surface. Is a wood burner desired in this area? If not, would a ventless gas fireplace work just as well? That way, you could do away with the chimney all together, keep your heat in the room rather than sending it to the ionosphere, move it back towards the wall and surround it.
Just so the moderators don't get everything in a bunch, it is not an advertisement, as I do not hold my self out to services in this area. I just want to show you what can be done to a free standing fireplace. Go to http://www.chandlerscarpentry.com and click on "Projects three". This is a surround I did for a customer who had a full size fireplace with no wall space to sink it into.
I think this would serve the condo better.
