I've gotten a rear engine rider in and it was way overfull of oil. I smelled it and it didn't seem to have a gas smell to it. What I was wanting to know, what path does the gas take to get into the oil sump when you have one that smells of gas.

Through the breather.

If the breather tube is lower than the bottom of the throat of the carburetor, it could go through the breather, but generally it goes down the intake into the cylinder and seeps past the rings. Sometimes it will completely fill the cylinder with gas if the leak is fast enough and the rings are tight enough.
