Quick question - is there any clearance needed next to the joist for 6" remodeling can? So can the edge of the hole line up with the edge of a joist, or do I need any clearance for the locking tabs?

If you want to put one right next to a joist, what we usually do is remove one of the clips and run a screw in to the joist through the side of the can.
