Of the two kinds of air angle staplers (just air with manual trigger, or air assist where you hit the nailer with a mallet to drive the staple) which is better? or is there much difference?

Trigger actuated is for thin wood, up to ½" thick, as it shoots staples of 1"

A plunger stapler or cleat nailer is for 9/16" tp 33/32" thick flooring and is able to shoot a 2" fastener.

As Perry says, they each have their own job to do. But you will probably need both. The floor stapler that you hit with a mallet for the field, and an angle finish nailer with 2 1/2" 15 gauge nails for perimeter fastening where the stapler won't fit, as well as installing your quarter round or base molding.
