When drilling for a new deadbolt, how far do you drill from the existing door knob?

Hi Joan,
The normal spacing from center of the knob to the center of the deadbolt is 4 1/2". But it really is a matter of comfort and convienience. I've seen them right on top of the knob, and I've also put them where they through into the header.
