This is my first time taping and patching drywall in my basement. I don't have a mixer so I will need to use an already mixed compound. Can anyone suggest a good brand? Something easy for a newbie to use. Thanks in advance.

Use the mud with the green lid for taping. Either blue lid [lightweight] or green will work for next coats. Even though the mud is premixed in the bucket it is still a good idea to further mix it. A paddle on a good drill is the prefered method. I have mixed mud in the mud pan using a broad knife.
Adding a small amount of water to the mud makes it easier to apply.

I also start with a 6" balde for the tape, then come back with a very this spread with a 8 or 10" blade - as smooth as possible to sand less.
