I recently replaced the old hinges on two bedroom doors and a closet with new hinges. The problem I have is that when I have the doors open, then all close and will only remain open if I put something in front of them. Can someone tell me how to remedy this frustrating situation. Thank you in advance for your help.

The door frames are not plumb. Place a level vertically on the door frame (not on the case molding), on the hinge side, then on the latch side. You will probably find that one or both are not plumb. Were the hinges the same size as the old ones? Why did you change them anyway, were they worn out? Were the doors acting like this before you replaced the hinges?

Thanks for your reply. I hung another of the doors this morning and that one seems to work as it should. The hinges were the same size as the old ones, but their thickness may be slightly different. I changed them because they were gold and my wife and I were switching to a nickel color. The doors were "normal" before switching the hinges. So far one of the three doors is working properly. Thanks again!

The textbook fix is to remove one or more of the hinge pins, place it on a solid object, and smack the middle of the pin with a hammer. This will put a slight bend in the pin and when you reinsert it in the hinge there will be a small amount of drag that will help keep the door from swinging freely.
