Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Mower Engine won't kill

I have a Toro Super Recycler with the B&S 6hp GTS5 engine that I have seen discussed here before. My problem is not starting the engine, rather stopping it. Mine is the push model and when I let go of the handle, the engine and more seriously, the blade, continue to run. If I reach down to the right side and "squeeze" the linkage together, I can kill the engine.

I have removed and lubed the cable but that is not the problem as there is no tension at all when the handle is released. Is there some limiter screw I neeed to adjust to get this engine killed?

So the cable is still working? This engine has one kill wire, from the coil to where the cable is attached at the mower, and is grounded at the same time as the flywheel brake is released. Sounds like some grass or something has gotten around it.

I've yet to see this, but, the brake assembly return spring could have broken, thereby not returning the brake arm to its full engaged position. The brake does two things, first it stops the flywheel and secondly it shorts the ignition system by grounding the coil. With the control cable disconnected, can you easily move the arm back and forth? This would indicate the above mentioned problem. Post back with your engines' ID numbers.

Maybe it will help if I refer to the drawing, https://lookup2.toro.com/Ill/1x/375/375100.gif. Part No. 923 has two ears, one attached to the brake handle cable the other is spring tensioned. When I release the brake handle the cable definitely slackens and releases it's ear sufficiently, but I have to reach down and manually squeeze these two ears together to kill the engine. Must be something obstructing the opposite side of the ear inside the engine.

I'm going to spray cleaner on the linkage and make sure the contact is good. Mower is a model 20493 SR-21P.

Thanks everyone, cleaning the linkage and bending the armature a little bit restored the contact so that now it kills the engine.

The spring I referred to is item # 922. Hopefully you don't have further trouble with this and it is an isolated incident or at least a bit of lubricant every once in a while will cure its' ills.

Thanks. It was the contact between part 621 and the tab on 923 that I had to restore.
