My wife & I are considering installing hardwood floors in part of our basement. I prefer to due ceramic tile in the area we are considering (high traffic area from the outside to the bathroom) and she wants to do hardwood. Can I install hardwood directly over the concrete? Or must I have a subfloor? I don't care for the look, feel & sound of laminate so that option is ruled out.

Solid 3/4" hardwood can not be installed in basement because of moisture issues and the dimensional instability of solid wood. Engineered hardwood can because it is more dimensionally stable. In a high traffic area from the outdoors, ceramic tile would be more durable.
