Hello -
I want to remove my kitchen cabinets and replace them. There are soffits above the existing cabinets and I would also like to remove the soffits. However, there is a penninsula of cabinets w/a soffit above and this comes out into the middle of my kitchen/eating area. I want the soffit gone, but how difficult is it to repair the ceiling? It is a cheesy '70's/80's popcorn ceiling. Do I have to replace the entire ceiling?

The soffits are substructures, and should pose no problem in removing them. You will have to decide by exploratory surgery how they will come out and how you will finish the ceiling once they are out. My kitchen is exactly like yours, but I have second thoughts about removing them, because if I do, all I will have left after new cabinets are installed will be a dust catcher, so I think I will leave mine alone and put a border up on top.
Of course longer top cabinets are now possible once you remove the soffiting. Explore and see what you have. The worst you will have is a patch job if you feel you can't do it. Good luck, and post back if we can help.

I agree about the dust catcher.....however, our kitchen is so small that I think taking out the soffits would help it look bigger. Is there an relatively easy way to repair popcorn ceiling?

Yes, it is called a paint scraper. I hate popcorn ceilings. The numb brain that built our house back in 1978 even popcorned the bathrooms!! With all the moisture, you know what is happening. But back to your question. if the area is smaller than 3 square feet, you can buy aerosol cans of popcorn repair at one of the big boxes. They are messy, and anything within 10 you don't want popcorn on you had better cover it. But blended on the edges, they make a decent repair.

Popcorn is relatively easy to remove - use a pump up sprayer with water - and mist/soak the popcorn - scrape it off with a 4 inch paint scraper/drywall knife.... I'm removing all the popcorn in a 70's home now that I'm remodeling.... it's messy - but not difficult - I'll retexture with a nice knockdown finish that is a bit more modern....
