We just bought a beautiful old stone house. The windows were changed +/- 10 years ago. The finish is worn. Can we just restain and seal the windows or do we really have to sand 1st? There are 20 or so windows in the house. :confused:

If a clear finish has been applied to the windows, you will have to strip that finish. Clear finishes such as lacquer, varnish, polyurethane all would prevent the stain from reaching the wood. If the finish is flaking off next to the glass, or a few other minor areas, and you just want to touch up those areas with a stain that is similar to the rest of the wood, then all you would have to do is sand the spots that need to be touched up, apply the stain, and when it's dry, apply several coats of a clear finish. Spar Urethane is said to be one of the best finishes for windows.
