I'm trying to plan everything ahead, so there aren't any surprises later. I will be puting 2 pieces
of drywall together (but not the ends where they are thiner) they will both be 1/2" thick, should
i use tape, or just fill the seam with joint compound? Newbe says thanks for any help.

You'll need to use tape if you want this to be a job that lasts. Joint compound only will crack in a short period of time.

This is a "butt" joint. Not only should you use tape, you'll have to feather the dry wall compound away from the joint for at least 5-6" on each side if you want the joint to be nearly invisible. Use a thin bed coat for the tape and after it drys knock off any high spots and add another, wider thin coat, just covering the tape. A final coat should give you the results you want without a mounded, visible joint.

You need to have a 10-12" knife to apply the final coat of mud. When finished the joint should be close to 2' wide which helps to make the 'high' joint disappear.
