A few weeks ago my Sears water heater quit heating.Resetting the circuit breaker on the upper thermostat worked but it continued to pop.I called the company and was advised to replace the upper thermostat, which I did.It continues to pop, sometimes daily, sometimes 2 or 3 days apart. Now that I'm on this site I see that both thermostats should be changed at the same time.Would just changing the top one do this?It is a new one but it is the one that keeps kicking off. When the heater is working, and not much hot water is being used,it seems like it is not regulating, the water is very hot very close to the faucets (instant very hot water)!Any advice would be appreciated.willyd

The lower thermostat can cause the whole tank of water to overheat. The circuit breaker you are referring to is a high limit thermostat. Replacing the upper thermostat was not a bad idea but you should replace the lower one now and your trouble will probably go away.

If the problem persists, check the circuit breaker. If the elements are operating properly, it may be a bad breaker.
