Hi all,

My wife picked out and bought a Quikset lock for the front door, but the old lock is a Schlage. Can we get the Quikset lock keyed to work with the Schlage key?

The short answer is no it is not possible.I'll let the locksmith's that monitor this board spell out why as I don't know all the terminology.

Look at the keys on end as if you are the lock and the key is coming toward you, they will have a different shape. The part of the lock the key goes into is called the keyway and the key's shape must match the shape of the lock's keyway to go into it. While you will occasionally find two different locks with the same shape keyway, kiwkset and schlage are not a match.

Can I have a Schlage cylinder put in the deadbolt?

The differences in design and construction of these two brands does not make interchanging cylinders or other parts possible....partly on purpose and partly because they have two totally seperate origins and histories.

I concur with spdavid and mitch17 in that your Kwikset can not be keyed to your Schlage key.
The key profiles are pretty close to opposite each other and that's what makes it impossible.
Some locks do have keyways that are similar enough to get away with keying alike though. For example, a Weiser brand lock can be keyed to a Kwikset key. However, the kwikset lock can not be keyed to a Weiser key because the Weiser is too thick to go into the Kwikset lock plug.
Confusing enough?
Very seldom do different manufacture lock parts exchange with each other. Kwikset and Schlage are two that don't.

hey, i understand what ur saying, not many locks interchenge with keys for security reasons is why lock manufactureers use differant key profiles i think master and schlage use same keyway styles but not sure with modern todays locks, most of my door repairing was more of the door closing device or hinges i would like to get into locksmithing but cant easily cause no drivers license or vehicle.
(clean record) just didnt go to dmv when i turned 18)

master and kwik set use like designs in there key ways. schlage is opposite in the design. they look like "5's" opposite of each other if you look down the "barrel" of the key.

hopes some of this helps mikey, let us know,
