I want to install some recessed cans in a sheetrock ceiling. The rock is on strapping perpendicular to the trusses. I know I can't cut the lower chord of the trusses, but can cut out a peice of strapping between two trusses if that's where I want to install the can? Must I "reinforce" the cut strapping. Or am I forced to put the lights in the squares defined by the trusses and strapping? The ceiling is accessible from above. I'd like to use remodel cans, which will be much easier for me to install, but should I go with "new work" cans which can attach to the trusses?

I'd leave the strapping alone and put the fixtures in the sheetrock, that is what rework boxes were designed for.
