I have one light controlled by two switches. I recently added a second light to be controlled by the same switches. It looks like a two conducter comes over from light #1 to the switch. I don't know how to wire the new light to the same switches. Also, is it ok to connect the nuetral to ground going back to the buss bar?

IF you have two wires going from one of the switches to the light then you may connect your new light into either the switch box or the existing light fixture.

NO NO NO you may not connect the neutral wire to the bare ground wire. NO NO NO.

The fool-proof way to add a light controlled by the same switches is to run a black/white/bare cable from (any one of) the existing light to the new light. At the existing light, simply connect the new cable to exactly the same wires that the existing light is connected to. Don't change any other connections you might or might not find in the box.

I have 2 conducter + ground coming from the first light to switch 1. The white wire is connected to the black wire going to switch #2. The black wire is hooked up to the dark screw on switch #1. I ran my 2nd light into switch #1. I don't know how to tie this in. Do I even have a nuetral wire to tie into? Confused yet?

Tell us all the connection at sw1 before you made any changes.

You can't do it from that switch...As you have determined, there is no neutral there.

Do like John says...Run from the old light to the new one.

Here's what you do have: You have a switch loop coming from the light to the switch. Most likely, power is being brought from the light via the white wire, which is tied to the black going to the second switch. If you open that second switch box, you will find that black wire connected to the dark screw of that switch. Red/white on that cable are the travelers between the two switches. The black connected to the first switches dark screw carries the now switched power back to the light. This is a common configuration for three way switches.

You are correct in your wiring description. I do not have access to the old light. The new light is in the attic. Can I run a nuetral wire over to an exsisting junction box from the light and connect my black wire going to the dark screw on sw1? Will this work?

You might be able to make it "work", but it might not be safe, and it probably will violate code. I would not do that.

If the new light is in the attic, then why do you want to power it from this switch? If you have access to access to an "existing junction box" that you wanted to run a neutral from, why use it to get your hot and neutral, then add a new switch to control that light? I believe you will be a lot better off that way.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, access to the new light is in the attic,it is a recessed ceiling light in a hallway at the top of the steps. The old light is at the bottom of the steps. Any other ideas, other than tieing the new light directly into the old one? Thank you for your help.
