I hear a woodpecker in my chimney on occassion. What can I do? I've tried shooting it w/ a pellet gun because it also pecks holes in my stucco & the wood at one of my eves. Thanks!

Providing you have a masonry fireplace (not a pre-fab) the best thing to do is to get a cap (aka hood) on the flues. A proper sized cap should prevent any animal from getting inside the chimney.

If you have a tin chimney, a woodpecker should not ruin it too quickly. If it is a real masonry chimney, he will give up quickly. - He is only looking for food or to make a loud, tinny sound for a mate.

If you have a tin chimney in a wood box (chase) you are adding food into the situation since wood supports the things that woodpeckers like to eat after they made hole to hide in.

The good thing is that woodpeckers are about as smart as the people that build tin chimneys, since they also attack steel TV antennas and satelite disks. Woodpeckers look for food and mates (in some order).
