a week after the new sears water heater was installed - I heard occational dripping after the tank refilled and was being reheated. I traced it to a drippiing on the burner . Ive just lived with it for a couple months..My chimney off the heater pretty much goes horizonal for a foot before it turns vertical. Im wondering if this configuration makes condensation drip thru the center of the water heater to drip on the burner.

That is very possible. Vents on water heaters are supposed to always be going uphill. Turn the unit to pilot and disassemble the pipe and see if it has water or rust stains inside it. Good luck.

My new water heater was taller than my old one.
Guess its time I face facts and realize I must puncture another hole (higher ) in the Chimney.
I suppose hammer and chisel is this ticket for us lay folks.

Can you not use (2) 45 degree elbow fittings to make the line more vertical?

nope
i have a 90 degree going about 18 inches horizonal to the chimney.

Okay. I would still check the pipe for water before I started chopping into the chimney. I agree that the pipe should be run vertically but, I would want to know that the pipe is the problem before I changed it.
