Many of the windows of my house are "high" on the wall-- they are about four to five feet wide, but only about two to three foot tall and placed on almost the upper third of the wall (I think this was popular in the sixties/seventies in bedrooms). Anyway, any suggestions on dealing with it? I like the light it lets in, but I'm wondering if the floor length drapes are too much, and short curtains look strange to me. I am open to all suggestions... I'll try anything at this point! :-)

yes, those windows are the norm for Ranch houses. as far as draperies go, the choice is yours - floor length or short. when the floor length ones are drawn closed, you're disguising what size of window is being covered, so they look fine. this can also be a lovely backdrop for a bed. short ones look odd to me too, but they'd be okay in a child's bedroom. another option is shutters - either all wood with slats or fabric insert types. i'd avoid horizontal blinds or pleated shades, however, since they would just accentuate the horizontal shape.
