What causes a manual starter clutch to occasionally start squealing loudly? I've taken it off and cannot find a thing wrong. I've replaced them before but I can't find a mark on them.

Wash clutch assembly good with brake cleaner. It probably has dirt accumulated between it and shaft it turns on. Do not oil it.

There is a felt pad in the top of the clutch in the hole where the crankshaft post goes. It is dry, and does need oiling. Clean the shaft too, if it's rusted or dirty.

If you happened to remove the flywheel by means of hammering on the end of the crankshaft, you likely peened over the end of such and now it has a burr. Use a file to clean the burr on the top of the crank as well as some emery clothe to clean the shaft to a nice shine. Also do as mla2ofus says...clean the clutch and use some WD40 to lubricate the balls.
