My damper plate is rusted through along with the frame that supports it...standard rectangle with push up handle...it is allowing some cold air out of the fireplace...I need to buy the glass doors to keep the cold out ....need 2 suggestions 1) any idea where to find a cheap set of the standard brass doors ? (i do search ebay, but they can be expensive) 2) do I go with replacing the rectangle steel damper or the kind that has the cord that pulls down the rooftop dampler over the top of the chimney ($$$).....I do have the 4 standard vents (old style) which allow cold air in now as well....the passage way for these vents is located above my damper....was thinking that it may be better to cut off the air at the top so it does not go into these 4 vents .....suggestions are greatly appreciated ......thank you!!

Regarding the damper itself, I would recommend installing a top-sealing damper (what you described) the unit will probably cost between $200-$400 installed - perhaps a wide price range but it depends on the area you are in. The alternative is to replace the damper with a similar style but that requires partial removal of the firebox and will cost probably double.
