I'm just about finished my basement...installed a drop ceiling 3 inches below the joist, bought halo recessed cans...question is how many cans can I install on the current circut..I've made 4 rooms out of basement and I'm pretty sure the 4 original lights down there are on one 15 amp breaker....do I have a problem with overheating...blown circuts,,,etc.

Thanks Tom

Depends on what else is on this circuit. Four basement lights is probably not the complete list.

The house is fairly new ...and I guess the basement was set up for some future use...Just the lights on a 15 amp circuit

If you are 100% sure that the four lights are all (being aware that stuff on one circuit is not always anywhere near each other in the house), then you can put a lot of lights on the circuit. If it's a 15-amp circuit, you can put up to 1800 watts of lighting on. Just add up the light bulbs. I'd probably try to stay below 1500 just to leave some room for error. That'll still give you probably all the lighting you need. This is assuming, of course, that you don't put any receptacles on the circuit.

Calculate the number of cans from the available wattage using the max rating of the can i.e don't make your calculations using 50W bulbs in a can capable of using 65W. The next owner might install higher wattage bulbs.
A safe load of 80% will give you nearly 1500 watts available. Using 65 watt cans you could install 22lights.
