I have a 12 1/2 hp briggs & stratton and there is 2 wires from the alternator. 1 black, for the lights and 1 red for the battery charging. I was looking for parts on ebay and found a regulator for a briggs & stratton, do I need this? Or do I just put the red wire right to the battery?

No, not on that engine. Just connect the wire to the batt.

True, but, make sure the diode is in place first. If you merely have just the two wires from the alternator and not the connector (with two short pigtails and corresponding colored wires) attached to such then it will send AC current to the battery. Make sure the diode is there. This engine has a dual circuit, low voltage, low amperage charging system and does not require a regulator. It is a 14V AC, 2-4A DC unregulated system. The diode harness (pigtail) is part number 393456.

There is a plastic clip they go into, the black wire is just a wire but the red has a lump under some shrink wrap right above this clip. I'm guessing that this is the diode?
