I recently installed recessed lighting that calls for either 100W R25 or 75W PAR30 halogen bulbs. My question is: which is going to be hotter (these are installed in a kitchen). What's the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thanks!

Halogen is hotter but lasts longer, exactly how much longer..... quieter when dimming. as opposed to conventional lamps. Your preferance really.

The trend seems to be more towards the R halogen lamps, from all of the lighting designers that I deal with. They have a whiter light. I'm changing all of my Par 30's to R's as they burn out.

Par bulbs are just your conventional incandesent bulb, whereas the BR25 bulbs are the halogen. The payoff for each? The par bulbs are a softer, dimmer bulb, the bad side is they draw 100 watts. R type bulbs are the halogen, they draw less wattage and the output is much great than the Par. Bad side is that they get much hotter. So pretty much if you want a brighter, more efficient bulb, go with the 75 watt R, if you want to save money on cost of the bulb and not have an extremely bright bulb, go for the Par bulb.
