My whites are orange... and so is my toilet bowl. The iron seems to come and go.
I just had my water tested.
10 gpg hardnes
.5 ppm iron
7.0 pH
Not bad, really. We have no foul odors, I just want my whites to be white and my toilet bowl to not be orange.
In your opinions, would something like this work?
(link is to a $80 filter cartridge that says it can handle up to 3ppm of iron)

Or do I need something more like this?
http://excelwater.com/eng/b2c/our_product_whbirm.php
(lini is to a $500 birm iron filter, says it is good up to 10ppm)
BTW, I do not care to address the hardness, water is what it is :)
Thanks for any help,
narc

The cartridge you listed is limited iron treatment on the plus side but you'll experience a water pressure loss and may need to replace filters pretty frequently as a down side.
Birm filter media is effective for iron treatment and requires periodic backwashing. There is no need for chemicals for regeneration. The downside is you'll still have hard water and chlorination (or periodic well shocking) will reduce Birm's activity and may deplete its catalytic coating.
For not much more of a total investment, you could have a standard water softener system treat both the water hardness & iron all in one. The net benefit in substantially decreasing your cleaning costs, having cleaner laundry, protecting your plumbing, extending more life to your water using appliances, and feeling great after bathing in soft water will more than pay for the system investment in 3-5 years, depending on household size.
Good luck out there.
