Lighting, Light Fixtures, Ceiling and Exhaust Fans - ceiling fan to light fixture

I just took down a ceiling fan with a light in my kitchen. I want to install just a light. I ca get the light to work, but it won't turn on and off from the switch. It is on when the breaker is on and off when it is off. There are 2 large cables running into the box. Each cable has a black, white and copper wire and one has a red. The light fixture has black white, and copper. I know the copper is the grounding wire. I connected the black to black and the white to white. What do I do with the red? Is that what is keeping it from turning off and on with the switch? If so, what do I connect it to? Thanks

Did you carefully record how the fan was connected before you took it down? If so, this will be easy. If not, we need more information. You've told us what wires are at the ceiling. We now need to know what wires are at the switch, and how they are connected there.

My best guess would be to connect the two black wires at the ceiling to each other, but to the light. Connect the two white wires at the ceiling to each other and to the white from the light. Connect the red from the ceiling to the black from the light.

The above guess is based on the assumption that you'll find one or two black wires, and one red wire connected to the switch.

Did you mean to connect the 2 black wires from the ceiling to each other but not to the black from the light? (I thought the not may have been left out) I can tell there is one red at the switch, but the rest are covered in white, so I'm not sure.

Yes connect the light black to red. Connect the remaining blacks to each other. Connect all the whites together.

I just checked and there is one red and one black wire attached to the switch.
