We have a can light over our kitchen sink and want to install a fixture sort of like a track light. It has a 4" surface mount cover, but our hole is 6 1/2" from the existing can light. Does anyone know of any conversion kits or cover plates to help make this hole smaller without trying to patch the drywall? I know we will have to install a new 4" box between the studs (like a ceiling fan), but maybe there is a better way.

There are conversion kits from can lighting to track lighting. Somebody just posted a link to one such kit within the last week. You could search the forum for it, or maybe somebody will find it for you.
