I took down the old kitchen chandelier and now I can't figure out how to wire the new one. Problem is, there are 2 black and 3 white wires in the box. I connected the two black to the fixture's hot wire and the three white to the fixture's other wire. The light went on, but when I tried the dimmer switch nothing happened -- at least in the kitchen. The kitchen dimmer doesn't turn on or off or dim the new kitchen light; however, for some reason, the kitchen dimmer switch now dims the lights in the den which is the next room over. Anyone know why? And how I can fix this.

Tell us ALL the wires in the box. You should have the same number of whites and blacks. Did you change anything at the dimmer?

Didn't change the dimmer at all.

The wires I mentioned were the ones hanging free after I removed the old fixture. If there are others in the box, they weren't being used with the previous light.

We need to know about those "others in the box" too.

Are you sure you haven't touched the red? I suspect you need to connect all the black together and connect the red to fixture black. Leave all the white together and to the fixture white.

No. Never disturbed those. The red connected to black is way up top of the box as it always has been.

I still think all the blacks need to go together and the red to the fixture.

But if you tell us all the wires in the dimmer box that might help sort this out.

problem solved. turned out one of two loose blacks had pulled out of the black/red when I removed the old fixture.
