I want to install, or have installed, a woodburning insert in a prefabricated fireplace. Would this job be too tough for a do-it-yourselfer? I plan to call a recommended installer for an estimate after he returns to town in about a week. Any brands of inserts that are especially good? Much thanks.

The biggest thing you need to be sure of (and you may already) is that your pre-fab unit is U.L. Listed for use with a woodburning insert and what type of insert(s) it is listed for; the same goes for the insert - that it is listed for use in a pre-fab fireplace.

Thanks for the information; however, my fireplace is 22 years old and original to my condo building. I can't even find the brand anywhere on the frame, so I doubt I can confirm that it is U.L.-listed for an insert.
