We're moving into a newly built home with light oak cabinets and would like to change them to a warmer, darker color. Is it necessary to strip and restain, or is there a product that would make this project easier?

You can buy a product which is the stain and finish in the same can. This can be applied over the existing finish to darken it. You might want to experiment in an out of the way place to see how it will look. In general, stripping and applying a new stain and finish is more reliable.

I agree, the product chfite is reffering to is a tinted poly/varnish - minwax polyshades is the most common brand.

You might want to contact the manufacture to make sure that any product you apply over the cabinets [without stripping] is compatable with the finish they used.

if the factory finish on the cabinets is lacquer or shellac polyshades will not adhere to it. in that case u may have to strip thru the finish and stain, sand to make the surface smooth, then stain and use a top coat
