I recently installed a Takagi Tankless Water heater to replace an old electric tank type water heater. The other day I was outside near the vent and noticed a faint natural gas smell coming from the vent for the water heater. Is this smell a normal by-product in the combustion gas exhaust from these units.

The smell is in the exhaust when the unit is running. Also it does not have a pilot light.
